PETER HAGLAND FROM HOUGHTON REGIS JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN BEDFORDSHIRE

In a case that has shocked the community of Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, Peter Hagland, a 44-year-old man residing on Bloomsbury Gardens, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for his involvement in a disturbing sexual relationship with a young girl. The court proceedings revealed that Hagland had engaged in a prolonged and inappropriate relationship with the girl, beginning when she was only 12 years old, and continuing for approximately two years.

The charges against Hagland included three counts of rape and nine counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. These charges were formally admitted by Hagland during his appearance at Luton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to all counts. The court heard that the relationship only came to an end when the girl confided in a teacher at her school, raising concerns about her well-being and prompting further investigation.

Judge Richard Foster, presiding over the case, addressed Hagland directly, stating, “You have taken away her childhood and she might never recover.” The gravity of the situation was underscored by the judge’s comments, emphasizing the profound impact of Hagland’s actions on the young victim.

Prosecutor Bozzie Sheffi provided details of the relationship, explaining that Hagland initially gained the girl’s trust by buying her gifts and giving her extra money. Sheffi noted that the girl later confided in a support teacher at her school, revealing that she believed she loved Hagland. The first instance of sexual intercourse occurred in December 2006, when the girl was just 12 years old, leaving her confused and shocked by the experience.

Sheffi further explained that over the course of nearly two years, Hagland and the girl engaged in numerous intimate encounters. The situation escalated to the point where, in November 2008, the girl attempted to end the relationship. She confided in a teacher at her school about her distress, which led to Hagland’s arrest later that month. During police interviews, Hagland made no comment, refusing to speak about the allegations against him.

Defense lawyer Liam Walker acknowledged the seriousness of Hagland’s actions, stating, “He accepts the relationship he embarked on was wholly unacceptable.” However, Walker also pointed out that the Crown did not dispute that many of the acts were largely consensual, and emphasized that Hagland recognizes his failings. The court’s decision to impose a ten-year sentence reflects the severity of the crimes committed and the need to protect vulnerable minors from such predatory behavior.
