PETER BURNETT'S SHOCKING SEX OFFENSES IN SHERBORNE AND YEOVIL REVEALED

In December 2012, it was reported that Peter Burnett, who still resides on Tintagel Road in Yeovil, was involved in a series of disturbing criminal activities. The details of his offenses, which span several years, have shocked the local communities of Sherborne and Yeovil, raising serious concerns about safeguarding and vetting procedures.

Back in September 2004, Burnett, then aged 27, faced serious allegations related to his conduct as a teacher. He was accused of engaging in sexual misconduct with young pupils during a school trip, an incident that took place while he was employed at a primary school near Sherborne, Dorset. The school trip was to Weymouth, and it was during this outing that Burnett allegedly targeted vulnerable children.

According to reports, Burnett, a teacher at the time, would lure children with lollipops before engaging in inappropriate physical contact. The victims, aged between eight and eleven, confided in their parents about the traumatic experiences they endured at his hands. The total number of children affected was eight boys and five girls, all of whom suffered during this trip.

Further investigations revealed that Burnett's misconduct was not limited to the school trip alone. Over the course of his eight months working at the Dorset primary school, he committed additional acts of abuse both inside the classroom and during a country dancing lesson, which was conducted in front of other pupils. These incidents added to the gravity of his criminal behavior.

Despite concerns raised by his previous head teacher regarding his suitability for the role, Burnett was able to secure employment at the school near Sherborne. This oversight has prompted questions about the vetting process and background checks conducted before hiring teachers in the area.

Burnett ultimately pleaded guilty at Dorchester Crown Court to 20 counts of indecent assault. His admission of guilt has led to a sentencing recommendation of three and a half years in prison. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to monitor his activities and prevent further harm.

The case has left the local communities of Sherborne and Yeovil deeply shaken, highlighting the importance of rigorous safeguarding measures to protect children from predators within educational environments.
