PETER BERENYI FROM REDHILL JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES
In August 2019, a former educator from Redhill faced the grim reality of a prison sentence after being convicted for possessing indecent images of children for the second time within a span of less than two years. Peter Berenyi, aged 61 and residing on Ridgeway Road in Redhill, was sentenced to a total of 10 months behind bars. His legal representative revealed that Berenyi had been struggling with an addiction to viewing child abuse images, which contributed to his repeated breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that had been imposed following his initial conviction in late 2017.The first conviction in 2017 had stemmed from his downloading hundreds of indecent images, prompting the court to impose the SHPO to prevent further offenses. Despite this, less than a year later, in January 2019, authorities detected that Berenyi had once again been searching for similar illicit material. This was uncovered when software installed on his computers, as part of the monitoring conditions of his SHPO, flagged suspicious activity. Police officers subsequently visited his residence and discovered that he had downloaded nearly 200 additional images of child abuse.
Further investigations revealed that Berenyi had purchased a new laptop, which he failed to declare to the authorities as required by the terms of his SHPO. This device was used to access various websites, including message boards where users shared and exchanged child abuse images. The evidence collected led to his conviction for breaching the SHPO and possessing indecent images of children.
Judge Taylor sentenced Berenyi to 10 months in prison, a reduction from the original 15 months, acknowledging his guilty plea. The court ordered that he serve up to half of his sentence in custody, with the remainder to be served on license. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in monitoring and prosecuting individuals involved in the distribution and possession of child abuse material, especially when breaches of protective orders occur.
