PETER BAMFORTH FROM WINCHESTER SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES CRIME

In a case that has shocked the community of Winchester, Hampshire, a 67-year-old man named Peter Bamforth has been handed a six-month prison sentence, which has been suspended for two years, after admitting to possessing and downloading indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that Bamforth, a resident of Oxford Road, had engaged in this illegal activity over a span of nearly three years, from July 2011 to May 2014.

According to court records, Bamforth pleaded guilty to 21 charges related to the possession of images depicting minors aged between eight and 15. The police investigation was initiated after Bamforth was found to have shared some of these files, raising concerns about the extent of his activities. Winchester Crown Court heard that Bamforth, who is described as a professional in the business sector, had accessed these illicit images for a period of 14 years, and his online activity also included viewing adult pornography.

During the trial, the prosecution's counsel, Tessa Hingston, highlighted that among the material Bamforth accessed was a particularly serious category of pornographic images, which he viewed but did not save. The court was informed that a total of 59 images had been downloaded onto his computers, which also contained treasured family photographs, adding a disturbing layer to the case.

Despite the gravity of the charges, a letter from Bamforth’s daughter was read aloud in court, describing him as a “gentle, caring and loyal” man, emphasizing his integrity and honor. This personal account was contrasted with the evidence of his online activities, which the court deemed serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.

Defending Bamforth, solicitor Katie Quincey explained that he was a grandfather who occasionally cared for his young grandchildren alongside his wife. The court was also informed that Bamforth would be required to participate in a sex offenders treatment programme, and his access to his young grandson would be closely monitored by social services to ensure the safety of the child.

Judge Jane Miller QC, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of the offences, stating, “These are serious offences. You could very easily have gone to prison.” Her decision reflected the gravity of the crimes committed, but also took into account Bamforth’s personal circumstances and the fact that his sentence was suspended. The court’s ruling aims to balance justice with the potential for rehabilitation, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community, especially vulnerable children in Winchester and beyond.
