PETER ATKINSON FROM PETERLEE CAUGHT IN SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN WOODHOUSE PARK

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Peterlee, 71-year-old Peter Atkinson has admitted to attempting to lure young girls into sexual activities during incidents that took place in Woodhouse Park. The allegations against him involve two girls aged 12 and 14, and date back to June of the previous year.

Initially, Atkinson faced four separate charges related to these incidents. During a hearing at Durham Crown Court, he denied all accusations, maintaining his innocence. However, during a subsequent court session, when the charges were revisited and the case was presented again, Atkinson changed his stance. Under the guidance of his defense lawyer, Jamie Adams, he pleaded guilty to three of the four counts.

The charges against him detail that he either caused or attempted to induce the young girls to engage in sexual activities. One particularly alarming allegation involves Atkinson trying to persuade one of the girls to go home with him for sex. Prosecutor Amanda Rippon confirmed that the plea deal was acceptable to the Crown and indicated that they would seek to keep the fourth charge on file for the time being.

Following his guilty pleas, the court considered bail arrangements. The judge ordered Atkinson to be released on bail, with a specified address in Peterlee. The judge issued a stern warning, stating, “Don’t assume that because I’m giving you bail, it is any kind of hint or indication as to what the sentence might be.”

As part of his legal obligations, Atkinson was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, a measure that underscores the seriousness of the offences and the potential risks involved. The case has raised significant concerns among residents of Peterlee and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address and prevent such disturbing crimes in the community.
