ROTHERHAM WOMAN SENTENCED FOR MURDERING HER HUSBAND IN A VIOLENT ATTACK
A 44-year-old mother of three has received a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering her husband through violent assault.Pauline Caster’s sentence requires her to serve a minimum term of seven years and three months before she becomes eligible to apply for parole, where a Parole Board will determine her release.
The incident happened on October 19, 2021, and she admitted guilt during her trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
Witnesses reported hearing her shouting and seeing her stomping on Kevin Caster shortly before his death.
An eyewitness recounted her screams of, 'Are you hurting you b*****?', and CCTV footage showed her attacking him for approximately 20 minutes.
Prosecutor Imran Shafi pointed out her failure to call emergency services for over an hour and forty minutes after the attack, along with inconsistent explanations of her actions.
A neighbor heard her calling for help, suspecting her husband had taken pills or overdosed on epilepsy medication.
The court found that Kevin’s death resulted from injuries and toxicity caused by a mix of drugs, including Lamotrigine, which would have caused death regardless of her physical assault.
Evidence indicated she had stormed and stamped on her incapacitated husband, with footage capturing her violent attack.
The judge described their marriage as 'volatile' and 'toxic', emphasizing issues related to medication misuse and prior abusive relationships.
Kevin’s mother expressed fears about their drug abuse and noted that their love, although genuine, was rooted in toxicity.
Their son remarked that death was 'inevitable' given their violent and drug-addicted lifestyle.
Judge Jeremy Richardson explained that Kevin likely died from a fatal overdose of epilepsy medication.
He clarified that Kevin would have died within minutes of the injuries even if Pauline had not attacked him, as his death was primarily due to overdose.
Pauline was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the judge stating she would serve a life term if released on license, given her conduct involving assault on a nearly unconscious spouse, substance dependency, and a history of violence.
The case underscored their shared vulnerabilities related to addiction and Pauline’s behavior during her husband’s near-unconscious state.
She had no prior criminal record and did not intend to kill but aimed to inflict serious harm.
The court noted that Kevin’s death was inevitable due to his drug overdose, and her action was deliberate and sustained.
Her background included an abusive upbringing and depressive disorder, factors considered relevant to her case.
