PAUL WOOD FROM SUDBURY AND WOODVILLE: CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE FOUND DEAD AFTER FIRE AT HIS HOME
In a tragic turn of events, Paul Wood, a man with a disturbing criminal history linked to the towns of Sudbury and Woodville, was discovered dead following a fire that broke out at his residence. The incident has shocked the local communities, bringing renewed attention to his past crimes and the circumstances surrounding his death.Paul Wood, aged 40, was previously convicted of serious sexual offenses involving young girls. His criminal record includes multiple charges of indecent assault, with his crimes spanning over several years during the 1990s when he was living in Suffolk. His victims ranged in age from 10 to 15 years old, and the assaults took place at various locations, including his home, a car, and an abandoned airfield.
Wood’s criminal case was brought to court in Ipswich, where he was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault. However, he was acquitted of a rape charge brought by one of the victims. During the trial, Wood claimed that his two victims had fabricated their stories, asserting that they had 'made up' their evidence. Despite his defense, Judge David Goodin sentenced him to three and a half years in prison, emphasizing the severity of the offenses despite Wood’s young age at the time of the crimes.
Prosecutors outlined that the assaults occurred between 1993 and 1998, with evidence suggesting that Wood had forced himself upon underage girls during this period. His defense attorney, Steven Dyble, highlighted that Wood was a man of previously good character who had attempted to lead an 'industrious life' after his last known offense in 1998. Dyble pointed out that there had been no indications of inappropriate behavior in the 14 years following his last conviction.
Following his release from prison in May 2014, Wood’s life appeared to be under some degree of control, but his past caught up with him once again. The recent fire at his residence in Sudbury and Woodville has now become a focal point of investigation, with authorities examining whether the blaze was accidental or deliberate. His death has left many questions unanswered, especially considering his criminal background and the circumstances leading to the fire.
As part of his sentencing, Judge Goodin also imposed a sexual offences prevention order on Wood. This order prohibited him from residing in the same house as minors without parental supervision, from being in the company of under-18s without their parents' knowledge, and from contacting his former victims. Additionally, Wood was barred from working in any capacity involving children at schools or voluntary organizations. The judge clarified that Wood could attend his place of worship but only under supervision if there was potential contact with minors.
During the trial in September, the jury was unable to reach verdicts on an additional 11 charges of indecent assault, which the judge officially recorded as not guilty verdicts. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a history of such offenses, and the tragic circumstances of Wood’s death have only heightened concerns within the local communities of Sudbury and Woodville.
