PAUL SPINKS FROM GRANGE-OVER-SANDS SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG SNOOP IN CUMBRIA

In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Paul Spinks, a resident of Yewbarrow Terrace in Grange-over-Sands, was found guilty in 2022 of causing unnecessary suffering to his dog, Snoop, a 12-month-old bull terrier-type. The incident took place over a month-long period from August 2, 2021, to September 2, 2021, at his home in Grange-over-Sands, located in the county of Cumbria.

According to reports, Snoop was discovered in a severely neglected state after RSPCA inspectors visited the property in September 2021. The inspectors, led by Inspector Martyn Fletcher, observed a strong and pervasive smell of urine and feces emanating from inside the house. Through a frosted glass window, they spotted Snoop lying on a windowsill in the living room, visibly emaciated and in poor physical condition. The dog’s ribs and spine were clearly prominent, and the skin on his stomach and underparts appeared red and irritated. Despite his condition, Snoop was described as friendly but jittery, indicating distress and discomfort.

During the inspection, the inspectors noted the presence of fleas scurrying through Snoop’s fur, further evidence of neglect. The floor of the room was littered with piles of dog feces of varying ages, indicating a prolonged period of poor care. A large black plastic bucket, half-filled with water, was found in the hallway, alongside an empty plastic food bowl. These details underscored the lack of proper nutrition and hygiene maintained by Spinks.

Veterinary assessments revealed that Snoop weighed only 14.4 kilograms, significantly below the ideal weight of 23 kilograms for his breed, and he was suffering from a flea infestation. Fortunately, Snoop was rescued and has since made a full recovery under the care of RSPCA branches in Warrington, Halton, and St Helens. He has been nurtured back to health and is now available for rehoming. A spokesperson from the RSPCA described Snoop as a lively, healthy, and intelligent dog who enjoys playing fetch, especially with soft teddies, which he tends to destroy. The dog also enjoys training, receiving affection, and relaxing on his own sofa.

Snoop gets along well with other dogs but can sometimes be a handful, so prospective adopters are advised to work with him to improve his social skills. Overall, he is described as a joyful and energetic companion, ready to bring happiness to a new family.

Paul Spinks pleaded guilty to two charges related to animal cruelty and neglect. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he received a five-year ban on owning animals, which can be appealed after three years, with the ban set to expire in January 2027. Spinks’s known address is Overdale Close in Kendal, Cumbria, although he was originally from Grange-over-Sands.

Inspector Fletcher emphasized the severity of the neglect, stating, “The conditions Snoop was kept in were unacceptable, and it’s fortunate he was rescued before his health deteriorated further. The RSPCA will continue to monitor cases of animal cruelty to ensure justice is served and animals are protected.”
