BARNOLDSWICK MAN GETS COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER ASSAULTING WIFE
A man identified as Paul Schofield, who was the head of Schofield and Associates Financial Planning Ltd in Burnley, was involved in an incident on October 4 of the previous year where he assaulted his wife of over 20 years, Caroline Schofield.During a domestic altercation at their home in Colne Road, Barnoldswick, Schofield reportedly grabbed his wife by the arms as she approached him, pushing her back, which caused her to hit her head and knee.
The court heard that Schofield pleaded guilty to a charge of assault, acknowledging that his actions were in self-defense but stating that the force used was excessive.
The relationship between the couple was described as having its ups and downs, with Schofield’s behavior becoming problematic on the day in question, especially after returning from work.
His conduct towards his wife was reportedly so concerning that a friend, who was there to collect their child, intervened and told Schofield not to speak to her in such a manner.
Following the assault, Mrs.
Schofield contacted a friend using a secret codeword to alert her to her situation, leading to police being present at the house.
Mrs.
Schofield provided a victim statement stating that her mental health had been severely negatively affected and fearing retaliation from her husband.
In mitigation, it was mentioned that Schofield had lost his previous employment due to the incident but had since found new work.
The court, presided over by Recorder Charlotte Deane, sentenced Schofield to an 18-month community order, which included 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation days.
Additionally, a five-year restraining order was issued to prevent any contact between him and his wife.
