PAUL RIPLEY FROM ROTHERHAM SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON BABY IN SHEFFIELD
In August 2000, a disturbing incident unfolded in Sheffield that shocked the local community and drew significant legal attention.A man named Paul Ripley, aged 28 and residing in Herringthorpe, was found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on a 19-month-old infant, leading to his sentencing to a two-year prison term.
According to court proceedings at Sheffield Crown Court, Ripley's assault on the young child was believed to be motivated by resentment towards the child's father.
The court heard that Ripley, in a moment of violent outburst, caused what was described as 'nasty' injuries to the defenseless baby.
Judge Peter Baker QC addressed Ripley directly, stating, “You inflicted a series of unpleasant injuries.” The judge further commented on the severity of the attack, noting, “It is fortunate for the child that these injuries, although nasty and extremely painful at the time, seem unlikely to cause any physical disability.” He condemned the act as an “appalling attack on a defenceless baby,” emphasizing the gravity of the crime.
The incident occurred during a brief period when the child's mother, accompanied by a friend, left the baby alone with Ripley for approximately 15 to 20 minutes around 11 pm.
During this time, Ripley was entrusted with the care of the infant while the mother went to collect a takeaway meal.
Upon her return, she found the baby crying and visibly distressed.
Ripley claimed he had not heard anything unusual during the time he was alone with the child.
Subsequently, the baby was taken to hospital, where medical professionals observed swelling around the eyes and bruising.
Further examination revealed injuries consistent with blows to the head, likely inflicted with a hand or fist, as well as an adult bite mark on the child's shin.
These injuries underscored the violent nature of the assault and the serious harm inflicted upon the young victim.
The court's verdict and sentencing reflect the severity with which such acts are viewed within the legal system, especially when committed against a vulnerable and defenseless child.
