PAUL NETTINGHAM FROM DITTON SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL PROPOSITION TO 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN MAIDSTONE

In October 2014, a disturbing incident occurred involving 64-year-old Paul Nettlingham from Ditton, who engaged in inappropriate and predatory behavior towards a young girl. The incident unfolded one evening when the girl, who was only 14 years old, was waiting alone at a bus stop in Maidstone. According to court reports, Nettlingham approached her and initiated a conversation, making her feel uncomfortable with his remarks.

As the girl continued to wait, Nettlingham did not cease his inappropriate conduct. He followed her onto the bus she boarded and sat down beside her, persistently making sexual comments. The girl, sensing the discomfort and potential danger, decided to contact her boyfriend via text message. Her boyfriend then met her at her destination, which led to Nettlingham's subsequent arrest.

During the court proceedings at Maidstone Crown Court, it was revealed that Nettlingham had admitted to inciting a child to commit a sexual offence. The prosecution, led by Kieran Brand, detailed that Nettlingham's behavior was both alarming and predatory. The incident was characterized by the prosecutor as a clear breach of trust and a serious threat to the safety of the young girl.

Judge David Griffith-Jones addressed Nettlingham directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. He stated, “This must have been quite terrifying for her and likely to live with her for some time. You targeted a lone and vulnerable young girl and there was a disparity in your ages. This offence was committed at night and you were drunk. I accept the shame and remorse you show is genuine and that this offence was a one-off and committed out of character.”

As a result of his actions, Nettlingham was sentenced to six months in jail, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to attend a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program and was placed under a sexual offences prevention order for seven years. This order restricts him from working with children and imposes strict monitoring of his activities to prevent any future harm.

Furthermore, Nettlingham, who resides on Golding Close in Ditton, was barred from employment involving children, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of minors from potential exploitation. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such predatory behavior is viewed and highlights the ongoing efforts to safeguard vulnerable young individuals from sexual offenses.
