PAUL CANNON FROM COULSDEN, LONDON, JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SURREY AND SOUTH LONDON

In a significant case that has shocked the local communities, Paul Cannon, a resident of Coulsden in Surrey, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple historical sexual offences involving minors. The crimes, which spanned over a decade, primarily took place across South London, Sussex, and Surrey, and involved a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior targeting young children.

Paul Cannon, a former primary school teacher, admitted to a total of 51 offences during the trial. These included two sexual assaults and four indecent assaults, among other charges. The offences were committed between 1999 and 2009, a period during which Cannon exploited his position and trust to prey on vulnerable victims. The areas where these crimes occurred include Sutton, Carshalton, and Merton, all within the South London region.

Victims described Cannon as often wearing sunglasses regardless of the weather conditions, and noted that he frequently rode a mountain bike while approaching children. Many of these encounters began with Cannon approaching young girls, mainly aged between six and 13 years old, under the guise of asking for directions or inquiring about nearby toilets. These seemingly innocent questions were often a prelude to more sinister intentions.

In several instances, Cannon would ask the children if he could take inappropriate photographs of them, sometimes offering money in exchange. Shockingly, some victims reported that Cannon proceeded to sexually assault them after initial conversations. The disturbing nature of these incidents prompted a police investigation that was initiated in 2006, following the identification of a series of linked offences against children dating back to 2001.

During the investigation, authorities collected DNA samples from two victims. Although these samples were identical, they did not initially lead to a suspect because Cannon had not previously been arrested or flagged in police records. It was not until 2012 that a breakthrough occurred when a 24-year-old woman came forward, alleging that Cannon had taken indecent images of her and another female while he was working as an assistant at a youth club in Croydon. This revelation was prompted by discussions with a friend, influenced by the media coverage surrounding Jimmy Savile’s abuse scandals.

Subsequent forensic analysis confirmed that Cannon’s DNA matched the samples collected six years earlier. Police then conducted searches at Cannon’s residence, uncovering more than 4,000 indecent images and videos depicting children. Although Cannon worked at various schools within Surrey and West Sussex, there are currently no reports indicating that he committed offences in his capacity as a teacher.

Detective Sergeant Nick Troon, from the sexual offence, exploitation, and child abuse command, expressed hope that the sentencing would encourage other victims to come forward. He emphasized that the police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet reported their experiences and urged anyone who recognizes Cannon or has information related to his offences to contact law enforcement authorities. Troon’s statement underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to protect children and bring offenders to justice, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
