TAXI DRIVER SENTENCED IN 2017 SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE FACES CRITICISM OVER LENIENCY
A young woman named Chloe, who was 18 at the time of the assault in 2017, was sexually assaulted by taxi driver Paul Bryan in Letterkenny, County Donegal after becoming separated from friends.Bryan, 63, from Newtowncunningham, admitted to two counts of sexual assault and was sentenced to four years in total—two years in prison and two years on license—at Londonderry Magistrates' Court.
During the court proceedings, Chloe observed that Bryan showed 'no remorse' and had 'not a single sorry' when facing her.
She expressed that her life was profoundly affected, describing how she did not leave her house for years due to fear.
Chloe decided to speak publicly to advocate for change and support other survivors, emphasizing that she still feels haunted by the trauma and recalls waking up to Bryan over her, trying to remember her assault.
She criticized the sentence she received as 'a joke', stating she had waited three times that long for justice and has been called an 'alleged victim' for seven years.
Chloe also recounted her experience at the Belfast rape crisis centre and how she saw CCTV footage of her being dragged by Bryan, which she has not viewed to avoid trauma.
Last week, Bryan admitted guilt and appeared in court, where Chloe was able to face him.
She described her feelings during the court session, saying she wanted to stand and look at him and that she wanted her face to be the last thing he saw, because for seven years, his face was the last she saw in her head, albeit blurred.
