In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Bristol community, Owen Baxter, a 23-year-old man with ties to Kingsdown and Redland, has been found guilty of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young boys. The offences span from when Baxter was himself a minor, starting in 2001, up until 2008, revealing a troubling pattern of predatory behavior that persisted over several years.

According to court proceedings, Baxter exploited his position within the church community, specifically at St Matthew’s Church located in Kingsdown, where he was known to volunteer and babysit children. His victims ranged in age from as young as four to twelve years old. The court heard that Baxter’s abuse was not limited to physical acts but extended into the digital realm, where he created and shared a vast collection of indecent images and videos of children. In total, Baxter admitted to possessing over 8,000 indecent photographs and videos, and distributing more than 3,000 of these images online.

Prosecutors detailed how Baxter’s crimes were premeditated and methodical. He would befriend families of young boys, gaining their trust, and then carry out his abuse in various locations, including his own residence, other private homes around Bristol, and at the church in Clare Road. The court was told that Baxter’s actions were driven by a disturbing desire to exploit and humiliate his victims, with some victims being as young as four years old. The court also revealed that Baxter had taken photographs of the abuse, often blurring his own face to avoid identification, and had warned victims that telling anyone would get them into trouble.

Online chat logs presented during the trial painted a chilling picture of Baxter’s mindset. He boasted about his crimes in internet chatrooms, discussing how to ensure his victims wouldn’t talk and encouraging others to commit similar acts. One particularly disturbing conversation involved Baxter encouraging an online acquaintance to abuse his own son, with discussions about arranging a camping trip for the purpose of exploitation. These exchanges demonstrated Baxter’s calculated and manipulative nature, as well as his willingness to seek out others with similar predatory tendencies.

Family members of the victims, who are legally protected from identification, expressed their anguish and remorse. One mother admitted her guilt for inviting Baxter to babysit her child, lamenting the calculated and planned nature of the abuse, which was promoted and reported online. Another mother described her horror upon realizing that Baxter had befriended her family with the explicit intent of abusing her son, describing her feelings of failure and shame as overwhelming.

During the investigation, authorities uncovered that Baxter had amassed a significant collection of child abuse images and videos, which he shared on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. When arrested, Baxter claimed to have been a victim of sexual abuse himself, but investigations into these claims did not result in any charges. His defense attorney, Michael Cullum, argued that Baxter had sought professional help from organizations such as the Bridge Foundation and emphasized that since beginning treatment, there had been no further incidents. However, the court was told that Baxter’s behavior posed a serious risk of future harm if not properly managed.

As the case concluded, Baxter was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing scheduled for the following Monday.
