OWAIN DINNICK FROM CARDIFF SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY INVOLVING EMACIATED DOG GEORGE
In a case that has drawn significant attention from animal welfare advocates, Owain Dinnick, a resident of Cardiff, was found guilty of neglecting his crossbreed dog, George, leading to severe suffering and emaciation. The incident came to light after reports surfaced that George was being kept in a flat on Newport Road, Cardiff, where he appeared to be in a dire state of health.
On 10 May 2017, Dinnick pleaded guilty to an offence under the Animal Welfare Act, acknowledging his failure to provide proper care for his pet.
The investigation was initiated by RSPCA Cymru, which responded to distress calls from concerned members of the public who had observed the dog in a neglected condition.
The dog was rescued in December 2016 by a local authority dog warden after being seen in a deplorable state, with ribs, spine, and hips clearly visible through his skin.
George was found covered in urine, with sores on his front legs and scabs on his tail, indicating prolonged neglect and poor hygiene.
The inspector involved in the case, Selina Chan, described the dog's condition as heartbreaking.
She stated, “This poor dog must have been so hungry, and been through such a difficult time.
Bones were visible across his skin, and he had nasty sores and scabs on his coat.” She further emphasized that the suffering was entirely preventable, attributing it to the owner’s lack of action, care, and attention.
“Sadly, the lack of action, care and attention from the owner caused the dog to suffer unnecessarily.
His suffering could have been avoided had the owner acted responsibly,” she added.
Following his rescue and subsequent care at the RSPCA facility, George showed remarkable improvement.
He gained weight and his condition significantly improved, a testament to the efforts of the animal welfare organization.
In sentencing, Owain Dinnick was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work over the course of 12 months.
Additionally, he was required to pay total costs and charges amounting to £802.20.
The court also disqualified him from keeping dogs for a period of five years, a ban that expired in June 2022.
This case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the vigilance of authorities in protecting vulnerable animals from neglect and cruelty.
