NIGEL TATTON FROM WORKINGTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN CARLISLE

In December 2004, Nigel Tatton, a resident of Workington, was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of a serious sexual assault involving a 13-year-old girl. The incident took place in November of the previous year, and Tatton’s actions led to a significant legal and personal fallout.

Tatton, aged 42 and residing on Clay Street in Workington, was found guilty by a jury at Carlisle Crown Court following more than four hours of deliberation. The court heard that he had carried out an indecent assault on the young girl while he was under the influence of alcohol. The assault involved Tatton touching the girl’s private parts, an act that the judge described as a blatant breach of trust.

Judge Paul Batty, QC, emphasized the severity of the offense, noting that Tatton’s conduct was a clear violation of the trust placed in him. The judge also highlighted the emotional impact on the victim, revealing that a police officer involved in the case had never seen a child of that age so distressed. The girl, whose identity remains protected by law, was reported to be doing well at her school despite the trauma she endured. She was seen sobbing uncontrollably after the incident, illustrating the profound effect it had on her.

During the trial, Tatton maintained his innocence, asserting to the jury that he had done nothing wrong. His defense attorney, Greg Hoare, explained that Tatton was experiencing a low point in his life and was intoxicated at the time of the offense. Hoare expressed concern that the conviction and subsequent imprisonment could jeopardize the future of Tatton’s cleaning business, which he operated with his wife, and cause significant hardship for his family.

As part of his sentence, Tatton was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely. Additionally, he has been banned from working with children for an indefinite period, reflecting the court’s assessment of the risk he poses to minors. The case underscores the serious consequences of such offenses and the lasting impact on victims and their families.
