NIGEL STEWART AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER ACTS IN CANTERBURY
A man from Canterbury named Nigel Stewart has been sentenced to prison after engaging in disturbing online communications with a child he believed was only 14 years old.The case highlights the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts.
Stewart, who resides on Gordon Road in Canterbury, initiated contact with his victim on September 13, 2022.
Over the course of several weeks, he maintained a series of conversations that grew increasingly inappropriate.
During these exchanges, he sent graphic images and explicitly requested that the young girl perform sexual acts.
Despite being repeatedly informed of her age, Stewart continued his pursuit, demonstrating a clear disregard for the child's safety.
The investigation was carried out by Kent Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team, who collected substantial evidence indicating that Stewart had deliberately sent indecent messages to a minor.
Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was communicating with was fictitious, created as part of an undercover operation to catch online predators.
On October 18, 2022, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Stewart’s home address.
During the search, they seized a mobile phone, which was later examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The evidence obtained confirmed Stewart’s intent to engage in illegal sexual communication with a minor.
Following a detailed and complex investigation, Nigel Stewart was formally charged with attempting to communicate sexually with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.
He appeared before Canterbury Crown Court on August 8, 2023, where he pleaded guilty to these charges.
On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Stewart, aged 55, was sentenced to nearly three years in prison—specifically, two years and eleven months.
In addition to his custodial sentence, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will restrict his activities for the next ten years, aiming to prevent any future offenses.
Detective Inspector Robert Grieve commented on the case, emphasizing the severity of Stewart’s actions: “Stewart aggressively pursued what he thought was a 14-year-old girl, bombarding her with indecent messages.
Had Stewart successfully made contact with a real child, the emotional and psychological damage inflicted could have been profound and long-lasting.
Sentences like this are crucial to protect children and prevent potential harm from individuals like him.”
