SOMERSET GOLDEN RETRIEVER ATTRACTION OWNER JAILED FOR ANIMAL ABUSE
A man named Nicolas Grant St James, who operated the Golden Retriever Experience in Dunster, Somerset, has been involved in severe animal welfare violations.
He was found to have kept approximately 40 dogs in extremely poor conditions, including 20 dogs in the bedroom and 20 others in the kitchen of his property.
During inspection, two dogs had already died under his care.
The RSPCA investigated and found that the dogs were living in cramped, unsanitary environments, which district judge Angela Brereton described as "woefully inadequate." She criticized the lack of remorse from St James, stating, "There has been no remorse or victim empathy – you were focused on your financial loss rather than the welfare of your dogs.
This is one of the worst cases this court will deal with." St James pleaded guilty to four counts, including failing to provide adequate accommodation, keep the environment clean, ensure comfortable resting places, and provide fresh drinking water.
The court recorded that many dogs had been rehomed in Cornwall, and some fights between dogs were observed by a vet, which he admitted were exacerbated by poor living conditions.
Although he entered a not guilty plea for other charges such as not providing appropriate diet, pest control, proper training techniques, and failing to care for injured dogs, he was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for a year, and was ordered to pay £5,000 in costs.
The case was prosecuted by the RSPCA at North Somerset Magistrates' Court, which highlighted the severity of the conditions and the lack of empathy shown by St James.
The surviving dogs are now being fostered and rehomed across Cornwall.
