DUNDEE WOMAN ORDERED TO UNPAID WORK AFTER CHILD INGESTS CANNABIS EDIBLES
A five-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after being allowed to ingest cannabis edibles. The child became extremely unwell and unresponsive after managing to consume the items at an address in Dundee.
He was treated at Ninewells Hospital’s high dependency unit and made a full recovery.
Nicola Naughton, 36, was ordered to perform unpaid work after she pled guilty to culpable and reckless conduct.
Dundee Sheriff Court was told how a packet of the edibles was discovered underneath a kitchen table within the child’s reach.
No description was provided to the court and it is unclear how many he ingested.
Fiscal depute Charmaine Gilmartin said: “The child had to go to the high dependency unit at Ninewells Hospital.
“He was unwell but thankfully made a full recovery.” “There was concerns about how the accused was acting at the hospital.
“She appeared to be under the influence and was not allowed to go into high dependency because she was being disruptive.” Naughton, of Dundee, pled guilty to a heavily amended charge of allowing the child to ingest cannabis edibles in February this year.
Naughton previously served six months in prison in 2013 and was given a community payback order for an assault at the Nethergate taxi rank in May 2024.
Defence solicitor Doug McConnell said she would be able to juggle an unpaid work order with commitments from her employer.
The lawyer said Naughton had been struggling with her mental health as a consequence of the case.
While sitting in the dock, Naughton covered her face and appeared to be crying.
Sheriff George Way said: “This is still a situation where the child could easily have suffered considerable harm.
“There’s no explanation as to exactly what has gone on here and how many (edibles) could have been consumed.
“It’s quite concerning.
“It has to marked given the extreme risk there was here.” Naughton was ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid work and was placed on social work supervision for 18 months.
