NICOLA AND GAVIN PEARCE FROM KILLINGWORTH SENTENCED OVER CRUELTY TO ELDERLY SPRINGER SPANIEL

Nicola Pearce, born around 1972, and her husband Gavin Pearce, born on August 2, 1969, both residents of Chestnut Close in Killingworth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE12 6GL, faced serious legal consequences after neglecting their elderly springer spaniel, Bracken, leading to the dog’s humane euthanasia.

The incident came to light when the RSPCA intervened after concerns about the dog’s deteriorating condition. On June 13, 2016, an RSPCA inspector visited the Pearces’ home in Killingworth and immediately observed signs of severe neglect. The inspector noted that Bracken, a 14-year-old dog, appeared emaciated, with a body condition that was dangerously underweight. The dog’s eyes were crusted and weeping, indicating an eye infection, and the overall appearance suggested chronic suffering.

Bracken’s coat was stained yellow from urine, and the dog exhibited signs of weakness and lethargy. The inspector’s assessment was alarming, prompting the dog’s immediate transfer to a veterinary clinic for urgent care. The veterinarian’s examination confirmed the inspector’s concerns: Bracken was suffering from multiple health issues, including urinary incontinence, a chronic skin condition, and severe neglect. The vet concluded that the dog’s suffering was so severe that humane euthanasia was the only compassionate option.

According to the prosecution, Denise Jackman, representing the RSPCA, stated that Bracken’s condition was indicative of prolonged neglect over many weeks. The dog weighed only 15.2 kilograms, significantly below the typical weight of around 20 kilograms for a healthy springer spaniel. The veterinarian’s report detailed the extent of the suffering: crusted eyes with discharge, matted and contaminated feet, and severely diseased skin. Urine samples confirmed involuntary urination, a sign of the dog’s deteriorating health.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that both Nicola and Gavin Pearce were aware of Bracken’s worsening condition. Gavin Pearce admitted to noticing the decline but failed to persuade his wife to seek veterinary assistance. The court heard that Nicola Pearce, who was suffering from severe mental health issues and was on anti-depressants, found it emotionally difficult to face the decision of euthanasia. Her mental health problems were cited as a factor in her inability to take action to save the dog.

In sentencing, the court imposed a 12-month community order with probation supervision for Nicola Pearce and unpaid work for Gavin Pearce. Both were fined and ordered to pay costs associated with the case. Additionally, they received a five-year ban from owning animals, which expired in October 2021. The court emphasized that the neglect was entirely avoidable and highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and timely veterinary care to prevent such suffering in the future.
