2011:SERIAL OLDBURY WOMAN-BEATER JAILED AFTER LATEST ATTACK
A woman from Oldbury, with a history of violent incidents involving women, received a three-year prison sentence after an incident where he hurled a plate, severely injuring his partner, Louise Archer. The assault caused her to sustain two tendons completely severed and a third damaged, resulting in ongoing pain and difficulty in performing daily household activities including cooking and cleaning.
Judge Amjad Nawaz addressed the court, stating that 42-year-old Nicholas Bending had reacted with anger, throwing the plate following a dispute where his partner’s daughter had hit him, causing him to fall against a door.
The judge highlighted that the act was highly reckless and that Bending could not have anticipated the injuries that followed.
The attack resulted in a long-term injury that is expected to be permanent, severely restricting Archer’s mobility and causing her pain.
Although it was recognized that there was some provocation, the judge underscored that this did not justify Bending’s actions.
He was convicted of wounding his partner after a jury considered the evidence.
Bending, residing on Dudley Road East, had prior convictions notably related to violence against women, and at the time of the assault, he was clearly intoxicated.
It was also accepted that his partner’s daughter was the first to strike him during the argument, which led to the plate breaking as Bending fell backwards.
During the trial, defence solicitor Mr.
James Martin noted that Bending had recently addressed his heroin addiction but had relapsed into alcohol consumption.
He described the incident as an unfortunate sequence of events, with Bending reacting immediately after being punched, and explained that the injury was caused by the plate when his partner raised her arm to try to push it away.
