FORMER NEWTON AYCLIFFE COUNCILLOR TO FACE TRIAL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN MAY
A former Durham County Councillor will stand trial next year accused of sexually assaulting a woman.Neville Jones is alleged to have assaulted the woman last year.
The 59-year-old, of Van Mildert Road, Newton Aycliffe appeared before Newcastle Crown Court last month, when he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He will now face trial, expected to last just a day, on Thursday May 14, 2026.
He was granted continued bail until the trial.
He remains prohibited from contacting prosecution witnesses, as a condition of bail.
Until May’s full Durham County Council election Jones represented the former Aycliffe East ward, initially as a Liberal Democrat when elected in 2021, but latterly as an independent.
He was once Deputy Mayor of Great Aycliffe, is known for his work with charity organisation Community Spirit Newton Aycliffe.
