NEIL COX FROM BROADSTAIRS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN KENT

In a case that has shocked the local community of Broadstairs and the surrounding areas, Neil Cox, aged 44, has been found guilty of engaging in inappropriate sexual activities with a teenage girl. Cox, who held positions as a primary school governor and as treasurer for Thanet's air cadets, admitted to the court that he had touched the girl’s breasts and bottom during a period of infatuation.

The disturbing details of his misconduct came to light after the brave victim contacted Childline on Christmas Day of the previous year, revealing the abuse she had endured. Cox, a former senior accountant with Kent County Council, where he worked from 1998 until 2012, boasted on his LinkedIn profile about his role in helping to set the budget for the county’s schools, which makes his actions all the more troubling given his involvement in educational and youth organizations.

During the proceedings at Canterbury Crown Court, prosecutor Edmund Burge outlined how Cox had taken on the role of finance officer at a primary school in London, where he also served as a governor. It was during this time that Cox began making inappropriate comments to the teenage girl, asking her if she minded if he “touched her up.” Although the girl initially indicated she was uncomfortable, Cox then proceeded to speak graphically about a sex act and, on one occasion, touched her breasts as he “brushed past” her.

The victim, understandably frightened, became wary of being alone with Cox and eventually summoned the courage to report the incident by calling Childline. Defense lawyer Simon Taylor acknowledged that Cox’s behavior was “deplorable and shameful,” emphasizing that his client deeply regrets his actions and is genuinely ashamed. Taylor also pointed out that Cox’s conduct was out of character and highlighted his previous contributions to the community.

Judge Simon James addressed Cox directly, stating that if the victim had not spoken out, Cox might have continued his inappropriate behavior unchecked. The judge emphasized the lasting impact of Cox’s actions, noting that he has lost his marriage and his job as a result, and that the stigma associated with his crimes will likely stay with him for the rest of his life.

While acknowledging Cox’s past involvement with Dane Court Grammar School and his work with the air cadets, the judge made it clear that these roles are now unlikely to continue due to the severity of his misconduct.

Neil Cox was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 80 hours of treatment aimed at addressing his sex offending behavior. Additionally, he was required to pay costs of £350 and to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, marking a significant legal and personal consequence for his actions.
