NAND JOSHI FROM PENGE SENTENCED FOR 14 SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN CROYDON
In a case that has shocked the local community, Nand Joshi, a 64-year-old man residing on Queen Adelaide Road in Penge, has been sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison after being convicted of committing 14 serious sexual offences against a young girl who was only 14 years old at the time. The crimes span a period starting from 1994, during which Joshi engaged in a disturbing pattern of abuse that included both rape and indecent assault. The victim, who was a minor, was subjected to this abuse over a span of approximately three years, with incidents occurring roughly once or twice each month. The abuse began shortly after she arrived in the United Kingdom with her mother and younger brother, marking a traumatic chapter in her life.
According to court records, Joshi’s misconduct was not limited to the initial assaults. He exploited his access to the victim by taking her to a property in Bayswater, where he continued to commit acts of sexual violence. His predatory behavior extended further, as he attempted to manipulate her by writing letters to her teachers, requesting that she leave school early so he could continue his abuse without interruption.
Joshi’s actions came to light after the victim found the courage to speak out about her ordeal. Her bravery was acknowledged by Detective Constable Manraj Sanghera of the Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Investigation Team, who stated, “The victim has shown great strength of character, she found the courage to come forward and speak about her terrible ordeal and because of this justice has been done.”
He was initially arrested at his residence in Penge on April 12 of the previous year and was formally charged on February 26. The case was brought before Croydon Crown Court, where Joshi was found guilty of seven counts of rape and seven counts of sexual assault. The court sentenced him to 11 years for the rape charges and an additional 18 months for the sexual assault charges, with both sentences to run concurrently. Furthermore, Joshi has been placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
His sentencing took place on Thursday, following his conviction the day before. The case has garnered significant attention due to the severity of the offences and the impact on the young victim, highlighting the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse in the community.
