MOHAMMED SAMMER FROM QUINTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN BIRMINGHAM

In August 2019, a serious criminal case unfolded in Birmingham involving Mohammed Sammer, a 39-year-old man from Quinton, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a vulnerable autistic teenage boy. The incident took place outside a shop in Birmingham, where Sammer was riding a pushbike that had a broken chain. He approached the 17-year-old boy, initiating contact by asking if he was interested in buying the bike. Following this, he inquired whether the teenager had a cigarette, and when the boy handed him one, they proceeded to walk together to a nearby park.

Once in the park, the two sat on a bench, engaging in conversation. The situation took a darker turn when Sammer led the boy to a quieter, more secluded part of the park, where the sexual assault occurred. After the assault, Sammer fled the scene, taking the teenager’s mobile phone with him. The young victim reported the assault to the police, providing crucial details that helped in the investigation.

During the investigation, the police found a cigarette butt and an energy drink can in the park, which were linked to Sammer through DNA evidence collected from the boy’s clothing. The DNA analysis confirmed that Sammer was indeed the perpetrator of the assault. The victim also described the cigarette and the energy drink, which matched the evidence recovered from the scene.

Sammer initially claimed during police questioning that he was desperate to sell his bike and that his conversations with the boy were innocent, involving only potential buyers. He also denied asking for a cigarette or passing through the park, attributing his unclear memory to recent medication he had taken. Despite his claims, the DNA evidence was irrefutable, and the prosecution successfully proved his guilt.

Mohammed Sammer, born on January 1, 1980, and residing in Quinton, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder impeding choice and theft. Today, he was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison. Additionally, he will be required to remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
