MAN JAILED FOR TARGETED CAMPAIGN OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
A man aged 42 has been sentenced to over four years in prison and ordered to stay away from a woman in Rushden following a series of abusive actions directed at her.Mohammed Miah, of no fixed address, was sentenced on November 4 at Northampton Crown Court to four years and one month after a guilty verdict at a trial earlier that year on August 1.
He was also subjected to a five-year restraining order that restricts him from making any contact with the woman, except through authorised channels.
Evidence presented in court showed that from April 21 to June 14, Miah repeatedly assaulted the woman at her home in front of her children.
On at least one occasion, he placed his hands around her neck, attempting to strangle her.
In addition, during a phone call, Miah threatened to inflict severe facial injuries to manipulate her.
He persisted in sending her unwanted texts and making calls in the following weeks despite her requests for him to desist.
On June 13, after she disregarded some spam messages, Miah called her multiple times.
When she picked up, he threatened to harm her and her family, and at one point, threatened to kill her.
The next day saw Miah calling her over 50 times, and later that day he spotted her driving, which was scene outside her parents’ house as she traveled with her children and mother.
When they arrived, they remained inside the car while Miah approached them on foot, demanding she open the car door.
She refused, and he became verbally aggressive, banging on the vehicle.
Shortly afterward, officers from Northamptonshire Police arrested Miah, who was found to have a utility knife inside his car.
He was charged with offences including engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, stalking with a fear of violence, assault causing actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and possession of a weapon in public.
