BRADFORD MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING HIS MOTHER DURING VIOLENT OUTBURST
A 23-year-old man who was prohibited from seeing his own mother has received a nine-month prison sentence.Mohammed Azam was present in an outhouse at his mother’s residence when he carried out a frightening assault in July, during which he threatened her life and broke her window using a broomstick.
Prosecutor Verity Barnes told Bradford Crown Court that at around 4 am on July 9, the woman heard suspicious noises outside and went to her daughter's room, where Azam told her that the fuse box was malfunctioning.
Ms.
Barnes explained: "She said she couldn’t get anyone out to fix it at that hour.
He was holding a broom and remarked 'You know where this is going' before threatening to break the window.
Subsequently, he shattered the window… He was yelling, 'I’m going to kill you and strangle you.'" Hearing the second window break, the woman called the police.
Officers found Azam, who was naked, having locked himself inside the outhouse where he was staying.
He was detained after attempting to strike an officer with a small porcelain piece, and as he was being taken to the police station, he spat at an officer.
A victim impact statement from Azam’s mother expressed her hope that her son would receive mental health support and shared concerns for her and her daughter’s safety.
Azam pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order, criminal damage, threatening behavior intended to cause distress, assaulting a police officer, and obstructing law enforcement.
He had been in custody since July.
The judge noted that while there was no detailed medical evidence, Azam was believed to have an unstable personality disorder.
Sentencing him to nine months in prison, the judge cited her concern for his mental well-being and explained that it was not ideal to impose a sentence without sufficient medical confirmation.
This case underscores issues related to respecting restraining orders and the risks associated with threats and violence against family members.
