MAN JAILED FOR KILLING MOTHER-IN-LAW WITH KITCHEN KNIFE IN ST JOHN’S WOOD
Mohammed Abdul Qayyum, aged 36, was found guilty of the murder of his 74-year-old mother-in-law, Aftaben Khanom. The fatal stabbing occurred around 9:45 pm on December 21, 2013, at the residence he shared with his wife in Bronwen Court, St John’s Wood.
Due to a strained relationship with his wife, Qayyum had been staying at the house only intermittently.
When he arrived that evening, both his wife and mother-in-law refused him entry, which led him to force his way inside.
A physical altercation broke out, during which Qayyum seized a kitchen knife and pursued his mother-in-law, stabbing her multiple times.
Although emergency services were called, she succumbed to her injuries before reaching hospital.
An autopsy confirmed she had been stabbed seven times, targeting her back and side.
Later on the same night, Qayyum turned himself in to the police, was arrested, and charged with her murder.
He was subsequently convicted of manslaughter and received an 11-year prison sentence at Isleworth Crown Court on January 16.
