MITCHELL PIRNIE FROM ALYTH FACES JAIL FOR SEX CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN IN PERTHSHIRE
In March 2019, Mitchell Pirnie, a 51-year-old man from Alyth, was brought to justice for a series of serious sexual offenses committed against young children in Perthshire.The allegations span several years, with Pirnie accused of abusing three girls and two boys between 1996 and 2004, including a heinous act of rape against one of his victims.
One particularly disturbing incident involved Pirnie molesting an 11-year-old girl at a residence in Perthshire while her mother was hospitalized.
During this time, Pirnie, who was then married, took advantage of the situation to carry out his abuse.
The girl’s mother discovered what had happened in 1996 and promptly reported the incident to the police.
Despite this early report, Pirnie was able to continue his criminal activities for years afterward, remaining free to target more children.
Pirnie, who was formerly residing on Airlie Street in Alyth, was eventually brought to trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Throughout the proceedings, he denied multiple charges, attempting to contest the allegations.
However, after a thorough trial, the jury found him guilty of nine separate offenses.
Two additional charges against him were not proven, but the convictions for the nine crimes were enough to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Following the verdicts, Lady Scott, presiding over the case, addressed Pirnie directly.
She emphasized the gravity of his crimes, describing them as a “very serious course of sexual abuse of children” that was of a “prolonged nature” in relation to some of his victims.
The judge indicated that Pirnie’s actions had caused significant harm and trauma to the young individuals involved.
In preparation for sentencing, Lady Scott ordered a background report to be prepared, which is standard procedure in cases involving sexual offenses.
The sentencing hearing was scheduled for the following month.
As part of the court’s decision, Pirnie was also placed on the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
