POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR ABUSE AND COERCIVE CONTROL
Mitchell Curtis, a 34-year-old former officer with Avon and Somerset police, has received a sentence of three and a half years’ imprisonment for controlling and coercive conduct, as well as for deliberately suffocating a woman. The incidents took place in South Gloucestershire while Curtis was off duty, authorities confirmed.
Jurors had earlier convicted him on two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, as well as for the act of suffocation and criminal damage.
During sentencing, Judge Lawrie called Curtis 'deceitful' and 'a bully,' highlighting that his misconduct led the victim to feel she wouldn’t be taken seriously if she reported him.
The victim’s bravery in coming forward was commended at the hearing.
Curtis’s arrest occurred in October 2022 after the abuse was reported, which also resulted in his suspension and formal legal proceedings.
By February, Curtis was found guilty of gross misconduct and had resigned before facing dismissal.
He has now been placed on a national misconduct register, barring him from working in policing or law enforcement roles again.
The abusive pattern included physical, emotional, and verbal mistreatment lasting approximately 18 months.
Following the verdict, police officials lauded the victim’s courage and reiterated their dedication to pursuing justice against perpetrators of abuse.
