A man named Mitchel Steven from Smithton appeared before the court to face serious charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The case came to light after police conducted a search at his residence in Smithton, uncovering a disturbing collection of digital content on his mobile device. The authorities discovered a total of 431 videos and 15 still images that contained material depicting child sexual exploitation, a revelation that has shocked the local community and raised concerns about child safety.

Among the videos seized, over 230 were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe and disturbing forms of abuse. These videos depicted acts involving children as young as one year old, highlighting the gravity of the offenses committed. The still images also included five that fell into the Category A classification, further emphasizing the severity of the material involved.

The investigation into Steven’s activities revealed that he was not only in possession of these illicit images but also actively engaged in conversations on the messaging platform Telegram. During these exchanges, he used a recognized coded phrase to initiate the trading of child abuse material. The communication logs documented direct exchanges of such content, suggesting an active participation in the distribution network.

Steven, aged 21, was brought before Inverness Sheriff Court to answer for these charges. The case was initiated following a warrant obtained on January 3 of the previous year. During the execution of this warrant, officers seized his Samsung mobile phone and laptop after locating him at an alternative address. Steven cooperated with investigators by providing his phone password, which allowed access to the incriminating content stored on his devices.

In court, Sheriff MacDonald ordered that Steven be placed on the sex offenders register immediately, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes. The judge also indicated that she was considering all sentencing options, with the final judgment pending the production of reports. The hearing was temporarily deferred to allow for these assessments to be completed.

The evidence presented confirmed that Steven’s offenses involved children as young as one year old, with the most severe images classified as Category A.
