MICHAEL TIBBITTS FROM KETTERING SENTENCED FOR INTERNET DECEPTION IN CHILD SEX OFFENDER CASE

In a case that has raised serious concerns about the conduct of a known sex offender, Michael Tibbitts, aged 43, of Oak Road in Kettering, was found guilty of attempting to deceive the court in order to regain unrestricted internet access. This incident occurred amidst his ongoing criminal history involving the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

Back in August 2010, Tibbitts was legally prohibited from accessing the internet from his residence or via mobile devices, a restriction imposed due to his prior convictions. His criminal record includes a 12-month jail sentence handed down in 2004 for possessing and creating abusive images of children, and a subsequent 16-month sentence last year after authorities discovered 40 similar images stored on a memory stick. These convictions underscored the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing risk he posed to children.

During a hearing at Northampton Crown Court, Rebecca Wade, the prosecutor, detailed the circumstances surrounding Tibbitts’ latest attempt to circumvent the restrictions. She explained that on July 15, Tibbitts, represented by legal counsel, submitted an application to the court seeking to lift the internet ban. As part of his application, he presented a letter claiming to be from Bill Chippington Haulage, a company based in Corby, which purportedly supported his request by stating that all their work was conducted via email and that they could not employ him without internet access.

However, the court was informed that a detective from Northamptonshire Police’s Dangerous Persons’ Management Unit was present during the hearing and took immediate steps to verify the authenticity of the letter. Contacting the company directly, the detective confirmed that the letter was a complete forgery. Although Tibbitts had previously worked for the firm, the company clarified that due to his criminal record, he was no longer employed there. The fraudulent document was intended to persuade the court to relax the restrictions, which were put in place to prevent him from accessing the internet and potentially reoffending.

Following this revelation, Tibbitts, of Oak Road, Kettering, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. Judge Richard Bray sentenced him to three years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. The judge stated that the restrictions were established for clear reasons—to prevent him from accessing the internet privately—and that his attempt to produce a fake document was highly devious and serious. He highlighted that had the deception gone unnoticed, Tibbitts might have successfully obtained the court’s approval to remove the restrictions, thereby allowing him to use the internet for illicit purposes once again.

Judge Bray also noted that Tibbitts was assessed by the Probation Service as posing a high risk of causing serious harm to children, underscoring the potential danger of his actions. The case also involved his wife, Jennifer Tibbitts, aged 41, who was present in court. She received a suspended prison sentence last year after being convicted of deleting images from her husband’s memory stick following police intervention, which was prompted by a person who discovered the illicit material.

Detective Eleri Neale, from the Dangerous Persons’ Management Unit, who proved the forgery, commented on the case, stating, “I think the sentence is entirely appropriate given the full circumstances, including the defendant’s previous sexual offending history. I am pleased that Judge Bray took the time to carefully consider all aspects of this case.”
