MICHAEL SMITH NEWLAND FROM CRANLEIGH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL IN EGHAM
In a case that has shocked the local community, Michael Smith, formerly known as Newland, aged 23 and residing at Pollingfold Farm in Rudgwick near Cranleigh, has been sentenced to prison for serious sexual offenses committed against a teenage girl. The incidents took place in February 2014 in Egham, and Smith’s conviction follows a detailed investigation that linked him to the crimes through DNA evidence.Smith was found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 16, with the court hearing that he had continued to touch her inappropriately despite her clear protests and discomfort. The court was told that even though the victim made it explicitly known she did not want any contact, Smith persisted in his actions, which caused her significant emotional and psychological harm.
The case was brought before Guildford Crown Court, where Judge Jonathan Black delivered the sentence. Smith, who initially denied the allegations, admitted to the charges in a plea deal in 2015. The court heard that during police interviews, Smith was visibly angry and insisted he was “not a nonce” and claimed he “didn’t need to sleep with little girls.”
DNA analysis played a crucial role in securing the conviction, as saliva samples taken from Smith matched DNA found on the victim’s stomach and mouth, establishing a direct link to the assaults. The judge highlighted that Smith’s behavior was particularly troubling because he continued to sexually touch the girl even after she made her feelings clear.
In her victim personal statement, the girl described feeling humiliated and violated, which led to ongoing emotional distress. She reported having difficulty sleeping, experiencing nightmares, and missing school. Her academic performance was notably affected, and her demeanor changed from being outgoing to more reclusive. The trauma also resulted in a diagnosis of depression by her general practitioner.
During the sentencing, the court also considered Smith’s conduct outside the initial offenses. In July, he assaulted three police officers, for which he received a concurrent 21-day jail sentence. Additionally, Smith was ordered to inform police within 48 hours of any change to his personal details for the next decade. A 10-year restraining order was imposed, prohibiting him from contacting the victim or her family.
Furthermore, a sexual offences prevention order was issued, restricting Smith from being alone in a room with any child under 16 unless accompanied by a guardian who is aware of his conviction. This order will remain in effect until 2026, ensuring ongoing protection for potential future victims. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of Smith’s actions and the community’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable minors from predatory behavior.
