MICHAEL SCHOFIELD FROM BIDEFORD SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND RAPE OF TEENAGE GIRLS IN DEVON

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bideford and the wider Devon area, Michael Schofield, aged 33, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple serious offenses involving two vulnerable teenage girls. The crimes, which took place over a span of several months, involved grooming, sexual assault, and exploitation, highlighting the dangers posed by online predators targeting minors.

Schofield, who resides in Bideford, engaged in a calculated scheme to manipulate and exploit young girls. He adopted the false identity of a 17-year-old on social media platforms, including Snapchat, in an attempt to establish trust and lure his victims into his trap. His first victim, a 15-year-old girl, was contacted by Schofield during the summer of 2020. Over the following months, he continued to groom her through online conversations, gradually building a relationship based on deception and manipulation.

According to authorities, Schofield's grooming tactics culminated in a meeting with the girl in the autumn of 2020, during which he paid her for sex using cash and drugs. This pattern of abuse persisted until the spring of 2021, causing significant psychological harm to the victim. The case became even more alarming when Schofield targeted a second teenage girl, whom he met in the summer of 2021. Over the course of the next two months, he continued to meet her in person, again paying her for sex with cash and drugs, further exploiting her vulnerability.

The second victim confided in two adults about her experiences, which prompted her family and friends to contact the police. This led to Schofield's arrest in 2022. His actions were thoroughly investigated, and he faced multiple charges, including one count of rape, six counts of paying for the sexual services of a child, and three counts of offering to supply a Class A drug. In a trial held in July of the previous year, Schofield was found guilty on all counts.

On Thursday, March 30, at Exeter Crown Court, Schofield was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison for his crimes. Deputy Senior Investigating Officer DS John Crewe commented on the case, stating, “Schofield started to speak to one of his victims online in the summer of 2020. Following grooming on Snapchat, Schofield met with the girl in the autumn and paid her for sex with cash and drugs. This abuse continued until spring 2021 and had a significant impact on the victim’s mental health.”

The case underscores the ongoing dangers of online grooming and exploitation, especially targeting vulnerable minors. Authorities continue to warn parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity involving young people to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
