MAN JAILED FOR APPALLING CHILD SEX CRIMES AND BLACKMAIL
Michael Salmon, identified as a paedophile, engaged in a disturbing series of blackmail and sexual offenses involving underage girls by pretending to be a teenage boy online.He contacted six young girls through social media platforms like Snapchat, where he impersonated a 14-year-old boy and established friendships with girls aged between 12 and 15.
Prosecutors stated that Salmon demanded explicit videos and photographs, threatening harm to their families if they did not comply.
For instance, he warned a girl that he would "stab each member of her family one by one" unless she sent more explicit content, and hinted that he would share her nude pictures with her school if she refused.
The police investigation uncovered his deceit when they discovered Salmon had used the alias “Thomas Connor Jolly” and engaged in conversations with multiple minors.
His illegal activities included blackmail, sexual communication with minors, possession and distribution of indecent images, and possession of extreme pornography, including content involving sexual interference with a human corpse.
Evidence also indicated that Salmon had previously befriended a 13-year-old girl in 2004, asking her for naked photos and sharing explicit images with her and her friends.
His actions had profound psychological effects on the victims, with one girl saying, "This crime ruined my life.
I lost my social life and my boyfriend.
I fell into depression and self-harming.
I cut my wrists.
I didn't want to be here anymore." Police carried out a raid at Salmon’s residence, seizing electronic devices.
His phone contained conversations with several girls and a folder with chat screenshots.
His Snapchat username was linked to earlier investigations.
Upon arrest, Salmon’s autistic son answered the door, and Salmon did not attempt to stop his arrest despite knowing about his crimes.
He also admitted that other family members had used his laptop, which held illegal content, including images of sexual interference with a corpse.
Salmon, of Francis Howard Houses in Darlington, pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including five counts of blackmail, six counts of sexual communication with a minor, three counts of sharing indecent images, attempting sexual communication, possessing indecent images, and possessing extreme pornography.
The court sentenced him to nine years in prison, ordered indefinite registration as a sex offender, and issued restraining orders to prevent contact with his victims.
Judge Jonathan Carroll described the crimes as shocking and wicked, stating, "If I was a member of the family of any one of these young girls, I would want to see a very substantial sentence given here."
