MICHAEL RANSOM FROM BURY ST EDMUNDS ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL

In a case that has shocked the community of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Michael Ransom, a window cleaner by profession, was found to possess an alarming number of nearly 79,000 indecent images of children. The incident, which came to light in January 2015, led to a detailed investigation and subsequent court proceedings that revealed the extent of his involvement in this disturbing crime.

Ransom, who resides in Vinefields, Bury St Edmunds, claimed that most of the illicit images were already stored on computer memory sticks he had received from a man named Steve at a pub approximately five years prior to his arrest. Despite these claims, authorities uncovered a significant amount of illegal material on his devices, which included not only indecent images but also extreme pornography involving animals.

The 50-year-old man appeared before Ipswich Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to nine charges related to the possession and creation of child abuse images. The charges included four counts of possessing indecent images of children on March 14 of the previous year, and one count of making such images on the same date. Additionally, he faced two charges of possessing prohibited images of children on or before that date, along with two counts involving extreme pornography.

Prosecutor Sheilagh Davies provided the court with details of the investigation, revealing that in 2011, a legitimate UK website had been compromised, leading to the upload and sale of DVDs containing child abuse material. The site was subsequently shut down, but inquiries linked Ransom to the site in June 2011, suggesting his involvement in the wider network of illegal activity.

Further investigations led to a police raid at Ransom’s residence in Red Lodge, near Mildenhall, in March of the previous year. During the search, authorities seized his computer and USB storage devices. The court was informed that these devices contained a staggering number of nearly 79,000 images, most of which were classified at the lower end of the severity scale, with only a few categorized as Level A, indicating the most serious content.

Ransom explained to police that he had been viewing adult pornography and that he might have inadvertently clicked on links that led to the illegal images. He claimed to have owned the computer for about a year and stated that the USB sticks had been given to him by Steve five years earlier. However, the prosecution highlighted that some of the images found on the devices had been added within the five years prior to his arrest, indicating ongoing possession.

Representing Ransom, Jacqueline Hamilton acknowledged the profound impact of the arrest on his life, stating, “Since his arrest it is fair to say his life has been turned upside down.”

In sentencing, Judge John Devaux opted for a lenient approach, imposing a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Ransom was also ordered to undergo an internet sex offenders’ treatment program, sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years, and adhere to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for the same period. Additionally, he was required to pay costs amounting to £150, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes and the importance of ongoing monitoring and rehabilitation.
