MICHAEL POINTON FROM BROADSTAIRS SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN CANTERBURY AND MARGATE
In a case that has shocked the local community of Broadstairs and the surrounding areas, Michael Pointon, a 42-year-old social worker, was sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to the sexual abuse of a young girl.The incident, which took place in November of the previous year, has left a lasting impact on the victim, who is now 17 years old.
Pointon, who resided on Prince Andrew Road in Broadstairs, appeared before Canterbury Crown Court last Thursday to face sentencing for multiple serious charges, including indecent assault and gross indecency.
The court was informed that in November 2010, Pointon, who was employed in the mental health sector at the time, made a distressing confession to a friend over the phone.
He revealed that he had touched the girl and coerced her into touching him when she was between the ages of eight and nine.
Following this confession, Pointon took the initiative to visit Margate Police Station, where he voluntarily disclosed the details of his misconduct to law enforcement authorities.
His admission led to a formal investigation, which confirmed the allegations against him.
The victim, whose childhood was profoundly affected by the abuse, has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength as she has grown into her teenage years.
Detective Constable Kirsty Verier, the officer leading the investigation, expressed her views on the case, stating, “This girl had her childhood disrupted and disturbed by an individual who saw her as easy pickings and was intent on his own sexual gratification.
It is a testament to her spirit that she has grown into a strong woman.
Regardless of a person’s occupation and public facade, there is no hiding place for such criminality, and this case demonstrates that every effort will be made to thoroughly investigate such offenses.” In addition to his prison sentence, Pointon will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order once he completes his term.
This order will impose various restrictions on his activities to prevent further offenses.
Furthermore, he will be registered on the sex offenders’ register, ensuring ongoing monitoring and public safety measures.
