MICHAEL PEGG FROM SOUTHPORT CAUGHT WITH CHILD RAPE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE

In a disturbing case that unfolded in Southport, Michael Pegg, a 44-year-old resident of Hall Street, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation involving the possession and download of indecent images of children. The incident came to light in July 2020 when police officers executed a search warrant at his home, leading to the seizure of electronic devices and the subsequent discovery of a horrifying collection of illicit material.

According to court reports, officers had been acting on intelligence suggesting that Pegg’s internet activity involved the downloading of child abuse images. When questioned, Pegg was cautioned and arrested, with police informing him of the allegations against him. During the search, officers seized a laptop from one room and a hard drive from another, with Pegg openly acknowledging the hard drive contained his 'naughty stuff.'

Following the arrest, Pegg was taken to hospital due to concerns about his mental health, but this did not prevent a detailed investigation into his electronic devices. Experts examined the seized items and uncovered a disturbing collection of images and videos. The material included eight Category A images and videos, which are classified as the most serious, depicting children being raped, including one showing a girl estimated to be between six and eight years old. In total, police found 5,531 indecent images, categorized as 214 in Category B and 5,309 in Category C.

During police interviews, Pegg admitted to downloading these files over a period of four to five years, primarily through torrent sites. He explained that he would delete the files after downloading them, but would sometimes save some on his hard drive to view on his television. He also acknowledged that he was using a significant amount of cannabis and ecstasy at the time, which he claimed contributed to his behavior. Despite his admissions, Pegg denied having any ongoing sexual interest in children, stating that he felt disgusted with himself for his actions.

Pegg’s defense team presented a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service, highlighting his remorse and the fact that he had made prompt admissions, which is considered uncommon in such cases. The court heard that Pegg had no previous convictions and had generally been of good character before this incident. However, the judge, Mr. Justice Anil Murray, emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the need for appropriate sentencing.

In sentencing, the judge acknowledged Pegg’s remorse and his insight into his problems, including drug use and depression. The initial guideline suggested a prison term of 12 months, but with credit for his guilty plea, this was reduced to eight months. The judge decided to suspend the sentence for two years, coupled with a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and participation in a Horizon sex offenders treatment program. The court also increased the hours of rehabilitation from 10 to 20, emphasizing the importance of addressing his addiction issues.

Furthermore, Pegg was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register and adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years. The judge warned that any breach of these conditions could result in immediate imprisonment.
