MAN JAILED FOR THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF HIS WIFE
Detectives have expressed approval over the sentencing of a man from Southport to prison for attempted murder, which followed an incident in June involving domestic violence.On the morning of Friday, June 25, emergency responders arrived on Virginia Street in Southport after reports emerged of a woman in her 40s being assaulted.
She had sustained stab wounds to her neck, chest, and abdomen, and was subsequently transported to hospital in critical condition, with injuries that would significantly alter her life.
Leslie Marshall, aged 51, was detained at the scene and later charged with attempted murder.
On Tuesday, November 9, at Liverpool Crown Court, Marshall received a prison sentence of 19.5 years, along with a five-year extension on his licence.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Caton commented after the hearing, emphasizing that despite her survival, the attack deeply affected not only the victim but her entire family.
"Marshall's actions in June have caused devastating consequences, and his sentencing today marks a step in the ongoing healing process," he stated.
He highlighted the role of Merseyside Police’s specialized resources dedicated to domestic abuse cases, which are often underreported and concealed.
The officer reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting victims and prioritizing their needs.
Deputy CI Caton urged individuals experiencing domestic violence to report it without hesitation, assuring support through dedicated teams and collaborations with partner organizations.
He also called on those who know victims be they friends, relatives, colleagues, or neighbours to contact the police, so appropriate support and intervention can be provided.
