FORMER POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR COERCIVE AND CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR AND STALKING
A former police officer received a five-year prison sentence and a ten-year restraining order after being convicted of coercive and controlling conduct along with stalking.Michael John Parker, aged 28 and residing in Osbaldwick, York, was an operational officer with North Yorkshire Police at the time of the offences.
On July 25, following a two-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court, a jury found him guilty.
Although sentencing was initially postponed, the judge deemed his misconduct sufficiently serious to order his detention until sentencing on September 9, 2022.
The court information revealed that Parker’s relationship with a colleague developed during their police training.
Throughout the relationship, he exerted control over her choices, dictated her movements, and constantly contacted her via text messages, phone calls, and radio communications.
He insisted on knowing her whereabouts and who she was with.
When she tried to end the relationship, Parker threatened to keep it ongoing on his terms.
Concerns arose among colleagues who observed his abusive behavior, his negative impact on his partner’s mental health, and her tendency to complete much of his work.
These concerns led to reports to the Professional Standards Unit and supervisors.
In November 2020, Parker was arrested and placed on suspension.
An investigation revealed a pattern of coercive communication, with numerous messages exchanged via the police radio system and mobile phones, demonstrating controlling behavior.
Prior to his sentencing, Parker resigned from North Yorkshire Police, which was based in York.
Deputy Chief Constable Mabs Hussain denounced the conduct, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in policing and reaffirming the force’s commitment to integrity and accountability.
Hussain highlighted the importance of officers reporting misconduct among colleagues, acknowledging that such steps can be difficult but are crucial for justice.
An internal misconduct hearing is now under consideration.
In terms of sentencing, Parker received two awards of two years and six months each for coercive and controlling behavior and stalking, to be served consecutively.
Additionally, he was granted a restraining order lasting ten years.
