THUG JAILED FOR ATTACK ON FORMER GIRLFRIEND
A woman has expressed her gratitude to a police officer for the assistance she received after her former partner was sentenced for injuring her with serious facial wounds in Canvey. She was present at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, February 14, alongside Detective Constable Leanne Howes from the Basildon Domestic Abuse Investigation Team, to witness the sentencing of Michael Norfolk, aged 28, whose address is Thorney Bay Road, Canvey.
Norfolk was sentenced to 13 years in prison for causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and he will serve an additional five years on license.
The victim was at her home on August 25, 2019, when Norfolk called her, alleging she had danced with another man though these claims were unproven.
Approximately an hour later, Norfolk arrived at her residence, continued his accusations, and became aggressive.
An argument ensued, during which a bottle was smashed, and the victim began cleaning shards of glass from the floor.
She lost consciousness during the attack and was left by Norfolk, who fled the scene.
She later awoke in a hospital with facial fractures.
Reflecting on the incident, she said, “I woke up and I was so confused.
I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror and I was unrecognisable,” Her injuries took three months to heal, and she is still receiving medical treatment.
She hopes her experience encourages others to be brave and report similar incidents to Essex Police, emphasizing the strong support she received from the Basildon domestic abuse team.
Detective Constable Howes commented, “She has shown an enormous amount of bravery since being subjected to a cowardly, horrific and unprovoked assault.
“Her abuser will now spend time locked in a prison cell where he will have time to think about his actions.
“By visiting her, making regular contact with her and by providing support to her, we were able to help Jess and send a domestic abuser to prison.”
