EASTERHOUSE RAPIST JAILED FOR 8 YEARS
Michael McSwiggan has been jailed after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.McSwiggan was convicted after a woman told police he raped and sexually assaulted her while she was asleep during a short relationship which lasted around six weeks.
The attacks happened at the woman’s flat in Lethamhill Place, Riddrie, Glasgow, in October 2023.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said McSwiggan was her boyfriend at the time and that, apart from one consensual occasion, the sexual contact during the relationship was rape while she was asleep.
McSwiggan was arrested on 21 November 2023 and remained on bail until the court case.
He was found guilty of rape and sexual assault after trial, with the case calling at the Justiciary Buildings in Saltmarket, Glasgow.
Following conviction, sentencing was deferred until 3 June 2026 for background reports and risk assessment work to be carried out.
McSwiggan was later sentenced to eight years and six months.
He will also be placed on the Sex Offenders Register, with the period of registration determined by the court.
Speaking after the case, the survivor described McSwiggan as “vindictive and manipulative” and said he tried to stop her going to police.
She said that after waking one night and realising what had happened, McSwiggan attempted to minimise or explain away his behaviour, including blaming his mental health.
The survivor said she contacted police, gave a statement, had forensic officers attend her home, and was taken to Archway for a forensic medical examination.
She said she reported McSwiggan because she had “had enough” and was focused on protecting herself and safeguarding her daughter.
The conviction means McSwiggan is now a registered sex offender.
Police Scotland say registered sex offenders are managed by specially trained officers, with supervision and conditions based on the risk posed by the individual.
The survivor has now seen McSwiggan convicted and jailed after a case which began with her police report in November 2023 and ended with sentence in June 2026.
