MICHAEL MCMAHON'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN WASHINGTON: A MONSTER UNMASKED IN COURT

In October 2016, a chilling case unfolded in Newcastle Crown Court involving Michael McMahon, a man from Washington, who was found guilty of heinous crimes that have left a lasting scar on his victims. The proceedings revealed a disturbing history of sexual abuse and exploitation that spanned over two decades.

One of the most harrowing moments in the trial was the victim impact statement delivered by a woman who chose to confront her abuser face-to-face in the courtroom. She, whose identity remains protected, recounted the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon her during her childhood. Her voice trembled as she described how McMahon, her attacker, had subjected her to a series of sickening assaults starting from when she was just 12 years old. Her words painted a picture of a childhood stolen by a man she now refers to as a monster, a term she used to encapsulate the horror she endured.

McMahon, aged 58 and residing on Raby Road in Oxclose, Washington, vehemently denied the charges of indecent assault. Despite his denials, evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture. It was revealed that McMahon had engaged in online chats with strangers, during which he boasted about being an abuser. These conversations, some dating as recently as 2014, demonstrated a disturbing pride in his past actions and suggested an ongoing interest in abusing others. The jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including seven counts of making and possessing over 200 images depicting child abuse, which he claimed belonged to his elderly father suffering from Alzheimer’s or his carers—an assertion the court did not accept.

Further complicating his criminal profile, McMahon was already known to have a previous conviction for abusing another child in the 1990s. This history raised concerns that he might have been seeking new victims in recent years, a suspicion that the court took seriously. Judge Robert Adams, presiding over the case, described McMahon as a “dangerous offender” and sentenced him to eight years in prison, with an additional two-year extended license period. The judge emphasized the severity of McMahon’s online activities, noting that his conversations indicated a clear lack of remorse and a potential threat to others.

Addressing McMahon directly, Judge Adams stated, “Such were the detail of the conversations, it was obvious, in my view, your intention was to carry out similar activities to other people, given the opportunity. I have no hesitation at all in concluding you are a dangerous offender.”

The victim’s statement was a powerful moment in the courtroom, as she bravely faced her abuser and articulated the lifelong impact of his actions. “The abuse I suffered at the hands of this monster has destroyed me and haunted me continuously and will do forever,” she declared. Her words conveyed the deep scars left by McMahon’s actions, emphasizing how her childhood innocence and self-esteem had been irrevocably damaged. She concluded her statement with a poignant admission: “My only regret is not coming forward sooner.”

In addition to the assault charges, McMahon was convicted on multiple counts related to child exploitation, including the possession of graphic images of child abuse. His criminal record and recent online behavior underscored the dangerous nature of his predatory tendencies, prompting the court to impose a lengthy prison sentence designed to protect the public from further harm.
