MICHAEL MCEVOY'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN HARBOURNE: SERIAL RAPIST SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS
Michael McEvoy, a 62-year-old man residing on Station Road in Harborne, has been found guilty of committing a series of violent sexual offenses that spanned over twenty years. The conviction was handed down at Birmingham Crown Court after a detailed trial that uncovered the extent of his disturbing actions and the profound impact on his victims.During the proceedings, it was revealed that McEvoy had repeatedly assaulted at least two women, with one victim enduring three separate rapes. She described feeling degraded, comparing her experience to that of a prostitute, as McEvoy forced himself upon her despite her protests. The court heard that he threatened her with death and warned that he could locate her and her family within just thirty minutes if she dared to disclose what had happened. These threats instilled a deep sense of fear and guilt, which contributed to her delayed reporting of the crimes.
The second woman also bravely recounted her ordeal, describing how McEvoy's violence and stalking had shattered her sense of safety. She detailed how he had bitten her genitals during an attack, laughing about the assault while she was bleeding, and threatening to disfigure her with a knife. She explained that McEvoy's threats extended to her family, claiming he could find them at any time, which led her to suffer from panic attacks, become housebound, and live under constant surveillance fears. Her testimony highlighted the long-lasting psychological scars inflicted by McEvoy’s actions.
Judge Dean Kershaw sentenced McEvoy to a total of 12 years in prison, emphasizing that he believed he could engage in sexual acts at will and that his victims had little control over the situation. The judge also noted that McEvoy would serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole. Additionally, he will be subject to an eight-year restraining order that prohibits him from contacting the victims. The court underscored that the passage of time does not diminish the severity of sexual offenses or the trauma experienced by victims. The judge highlighted the devastating and lifelong psychological harm caused by McEvoy’s crimes, which have left enduring scars on those he victimized in Harborne.
