SEX OFFENDER POSED AS SOLDIER WHO DIED IN AFGHANISTAN TO GROOM UNDERAGE GIRL
Michael Hewitt, aged 19, from Swaffham Prior in Cambridge, became embroiled in a disturbing case of online deception and exploitation. The incident began in March 2020 when Hewitt, who initially failed to establish a romantic connection with a young girl, resorted to creating a fabricated social media profile.
This fake account was used to initiate contact with the girl, who was only 15 years old at the time.
Hewitt’s approach was direct and intrusive; he immediately requested explicit sexual content from the victim through the artificial profile.
Despite her initial lack of response, Hewitt was persistent, continuously messaging her and gradually gaining her trust.
Over the course of several weeks, he persuaded her to engage in an online romantic relationship with the fictitious soldier he claimed to be a soldier deployed in Afghanistan.
As their digital relationship progressed, Hewitt’s manipulations deepened.
The victim, acting under the influence of the fabricated persona, eventually sent him revealing and intimate photos and videos.
To further solidify his false identity, Hewitt began incorporating himself into the messages sent through his alias, creating a layered deception.
The situation escalated on May 12 when Hewitt sent an email from another fake account.
In this message, he falsely claimed to be the father of the supposed soldier, stating that the soldier had been killed in action in Afghanistan.
The email purportedly contained the soldier’s dying wish that the victim should continue her relationship with Hewitt.
This manipulation was designed to evoke sympathy and deepen her emotional investment.
Concerned about the unusual and distressing communications, the victim’s mother grew suspicious, especially after noticing the lack of any confirmed military casualties from Afghanistan reported in the news.
Her concerns prompted her to contact the police, initiating an investigation.
Officers visited Hewitt to question him about his alleged friendship with the soldier and his motives.
Hewitt denied any knowledge or involvement with the supposed soldier.
The investigation intensified when authorities linked Hewitt’s electronic devices and IP address located at his residence to the messages purportedly sent by the fake soldier and his father.
This evidence ultimately led to his arrest by officers from East Cambridgeshire.
Following his arrest, Hewitt’s devices were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
He was charged with causing or inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.
Hewitt denied the charges in court, but the jury at Cambridge Crown Court found him guilty after a trial.
On December 2, Hewitt appeared at Peterborough Crown Court, where he received an 18-month prison sentence.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order also lasting ten years.
These measures are intended to restrict his contact with minors and monitor his activities moving forward.
