MICHAEL EDGE FROM SHEFFIELD JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRLS
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Michael Edge, a prominent figure in British Olympic diving coaching, was sentenced to eight months in prison after being found guilty of multiple sexual assault charges. The offences, which spanned over six years from 1994 to 2000, involved three teenage girls who were under his coaching during that period.Edge, aged 51 at the time of sentencing, was convicted on ten counts of sexual assault. The incidents reportedly occurred during warm-up exercises, a routine part of training sessions, where the victims, the youngest of whom was only 14 when the abuse began, alleged that Edge touched them inappropriately and intimately. Despite his conviction, Edge maintained his innocence, denying all charges brought against him.
Following the verdict, Sheffield City Council, which employs Edge as a coach, announced that he would be suspended from his duties pending further investigation. The council's spokesperson, John Mothersole, stated, “We will examine very seriously Michael Edge’s position as a council employee. Under the council’s procedures, he will remain suspended until a decision is made otherwise.”
In addition to his jail sentence, Edge has been ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further misconduct. The case has raised concerns about safeguarding within sports and youth programs, prompting a response from local authorities and child protection agencies.
Alan Jones, chair of the area child protection committee, expressed support for the court’s decision and emphasized the importance of safeguarding children. He said, “We welcome the judgment of the court and reiterate our commitment to protecting children. Our member organizations have very clear policies, and employees are expected to adhere to them and to the law. Misdemeanors in this area will not be tolerated.”
Officials from Sheffield City Council and child protection groups have reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring that sports and fitness environments remain safe spaces for young people, emphasizing that the vast majority of professionals in the field are committed to supporting youth with respect and integrity.
