MICHAEL CROWTHER FROM LUPSET FAILS TO CHALLENGE CHILD SEX OFFENSE CONVICTION IN WAKEFIELD
In a significant legal development, Michael Crowther, a man originally from Lupset, Wakefield, has been unsuccessful in his attempt to overturn a conviction related to serious sexual offenses.Crowther, aged 57, was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Leeds Crown Court in September of the previous year after a comprehensive trial that uncovered disturbing evidence of his involvement in multiple crimes.
His conviction included two counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and an alarming 22 counts of possessing indecent photographs of children.
These charges painted a grim picture of the allegations against him, which had been thoroughly examined during the trial process.
Crowther’s legal team sought to challenge the verdict by claiming that he possessed tape recordings that could exonerate him, asserting that these recordings would demonstrate that his accusers had fabricated their allegations.
Earlier this week, the case was brought before the Court of Criminal Appeal in London, where Lord Justice Rix, Mr.
Justice Hedley, and Mr.
Justice Treacy presided over the hearing.
Crowther’s application for permission to appeal his convictions was scrutinized, with his legal representatives arguing that the tape recordings in question could potentially prove his innocence and cast doubt on the credibility of the victims’ testimonies.
However, the court was not convinced by these claims.
Mr.
Justice Hedley, delivering the judgment on behalf of the panel, stated that the recording in question was “inaudible,” and further noted that Crowther had no reasonable explanation for failing to produce the tape during the original trial proceedings.
The judge emphasized that Crowther had been convicted based on “compelling evidence,” which the court found to be sufficient and convincing.
Concluding the hearing, Mr.
Justice Hedley firmly declared that the application for permission to appeal was “doomed to failure” and therefore, was to be refused.
This decision effectively upholds the original conviction, reaffirming the severity of the crimes for which Crowther was found guilty and the strength of the evidence that supported his sentencing.
