WOMAN, 26, LOCKED DOG IN SQUALID BATHROOM FOR FIVE DAYS BEFORE POLICE RESCUE
A woman, Mia De Merzo, 26, was involved in a prolonged case of animal cruelty.
She locked her 13-year-old American Bulldog, Zara, in the bathroom of her property in Heming Place, Bucknall, for five days while nobody was at home.
The police found the dog in squalid conditions, surrounded by faeces and in an emaciated state.
De Merzo claimed she attempted to care for the dog by throwing food through the window and providing water via the tap and toilet, but she was unable to access the house after the council took her keys.
She admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and broke bail conditions.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a five-year ban from keeping pets, handed a community order with rehabilitation activity days, an £80 fine, £85 in costs, and a £114 surcharge.
The magistrate emphasized that this was a despicable act and ordered an animal disqualification order for five years.
