MAURICE RAINEY'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN RANDALSTOWN LEADS TO PRISON SENTENCE
Maurice Rainey, a farmer residing on Church Road in the Randalstown area, has been convicted of severe animal neglect that resulted in the suffering and death of multiple cattle. Born in 1962, Rainey’s farm became the focus of a distressing investigation after reports of decaying carcasses and emaciated animals surfaced, prompting authorities to act.On March 6, 2023, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) veterinary services initiated an inquiry following a complaint about two decomposing carcasses found on Rainey’s land. Veterinary teams responded promptly, discovering a scene of utter neglect: numerous carcasses in various stages of decomposition scattered across the farm, alongside cattle that were severely dehydrated, emaciated, and suffering from a lack of basic necessities such as food, water, and clean bedding.
The veterinary inspection revealed that some of the cattle had access to hazardous materials, while others were confined in areas where sharp, protruding edges posed a risk of injury. One cow was observed with an open, oozing leg wound, clearly in pain, and had to be humanely euthanised to alleviate its suffering. Tragically, several other animals had already succumbed to starvation and neglect, left to rot where they had died. The scene was described by the vets as “frankly distressing to look at,” highlighting the severity of the situation.
Judge Fiona Bagnall of Antrim Crown Court addressed Rainey directly, condemning his actions and emphasizing that he had prioritized his own needs over the welfare of his animals. She pointed out that Rainey, as a farmer, had a fundamental responsibility to care for his livestock properly. The judge noted that the evidence and the disturbing images presented in court made it clear that Rainey could not have been unaware of the suffering inflicted upon the animals, which endured a slow and painful demise under his watch.
Rainey pleaded guilty to seven charges, including six counts of causing unnecessary suffering to cattle and one count of failing to properly dispose of animal carcasses. These offences occurred between March 7 and March 13, 2023. His wife, Hazel Rainey, was also charged; however, the case against her did not proceed further.
During the court proceedings, Rainey’s legal representative explained that his client’s mental health had been declining over the years, compounded by a physical injury that left him unable to cope with the demands of farming. Additionally, the court was informed that a failed tuberculosis test prevented Rainey from selling his herd, a situation worsened by his purchase of poor-quality silage and the tragic death of some cows due to slurry fumes inhaled in a cattle shed.
While the court acknowledged the mitigating factors presented through medical evidence and character references describing Rainey as a “kind and caring” father and grandfather, Judge Bagnall made it clear that these qualities did not justify or excuse the suffering inflicted upon the animals. She also highlighted that Rainey had a prior conviction for a similar offence in 2018, indicating a pattern of neglect.
Reflecting on the case, Judge Bagnall expressed concern about how long the situation might have persisted had authorities not intervened, stating, “If the call had been made to the authorities I dread to think how much longer this state of affairs would have gone on for.”
As a result, Rainey was sentenced to 20 months in prison, with half of that term to be served in custody and the remaining half on license. Furthermore, he was disqualified from owning, keeping, or participating in the keeping of any animals, as well as from transporting or arranging transport for animals, for a period of ten years, which will expire in September 2034.
This case underscores the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, serving as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with farming and the need for vigilance and intervention when animals are suffering.
