MAURICE PEACOCK FROM EPPING ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE PAEDOPHILE STING IN ESSEX

In December 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving Maurice Peacock, a 78-year-old resident of Parsloe Road in Epping, Essex, who narrowly avoided imprisonment after being caught in a covert operation targeting online child exploitation. The incident was orchestrated by a paedophile hunter who used Grindr, a popular gay dating application, to entrap individuals seeking inappropriate encounters with minors.

Peacock was convicted in Essex Crown Court of attempting to meet a boy under the age of 16 following grooming efforts, as well as two counts of attempting to induce a child to view explicit sexual images. The online contact was established with the vigilante, who was posing as a fictitious 15-year-old named Ben under the profile 'Young Male.' The chat logs revealed graphic exchanges, including the sending of explicit images and videos depicting male sexual acts, which Peacock believed were being shared with a minor.

The court heard that Peacock, who used the online alias 'DaddyFor-Teen,' engaged in conversations with 'Ben' between May 15 and 17, 2017, and attempted to arrange a meeting at The Oaks Retail Park in Harlow to carry out sexual acts. The paedophile hunter alerted police, and when Peacock arrived in his grey Mercedes at the designated location on May 17, law enforcement officers promptly arrested him.

During the trial, Peacock claimed that he had suspected from the outset that 'Ben' was older than 15 and continued the conversation out of frustration with being harassed by underage boys. He stated that he wanted to expose the online predators and was tired of being targeted himself. Peacock, who has been married for 45 years and identifies as bisexual, revealed that he had been acting on his sexual tendencies for approximately ten years. He explained that he used the 'DaddyFor-Teen' profile because he preferred men aged between 18 and 30, and he believed that the images he sent were of men in their twenties.

In a stark admission, Peacock acknowledged for the first time that he has a serious problem—a predilection for teenage males. The court was informed that his actions were driven by a troubling attraction to minors, which is a significant concern given his age and the nature of his offenses.

Judge Emma Peters delivered the sentencing, emphasizing that Peacock's issue was not related to his sexual orientation but rather his attraction to children. She sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for two years, and mandated that he complete a sex offenders' rehabilitation program along with 50 days of additional activities aimed at reform. Peacock was also ordered to pay the full costs of his trial, amounting to £2,800.

Furthermore, he was required to register as a sex offender for ten years and was issued a sexual harm prevention order, granting police authority to monitor his internet activity. The judge highlighted that homosexual relationships can be equally loving and respectful, but in this case, the focus was on Peacock's admitted predilection for engaging in sexual acts with minors.

Although the case involved a fictitious minor created by a paedophile hunter, the judge acknowledged that Peacock believed he was communicating with a real 15-year-old. She explained that her decision to suspend the sentence was based on the fact that no actual child was involved, but she stressed the importance of punishing and deterring such behavior. The court also considered a neuro-psychiatrist's report, which indicated that Peacock was in the early stages of dementia, a condition that might have contributed to his disinhibition and increased likelihood of offending.

Throughout the proceedings, Peacock's wife displayed dignity and stoicism, sitting through the trial and the sentencing. She was visibly emotional when she learned that her husband would not be jailed immediately, highlighting the personal toll of the case on his family.
